Quick answer

What is possum proofing and how does it work?

Reviewed by the Safe Possum Control team, updated September 2026

Possum proofing is closing every opening a possum can use to get into your roof, using materials it cannot chew or pull apart. When a possum is still living inside, one opening is left for a one-way door so it can leave first. After it has gone, that last gap is sealed too.

Good proofing starts on the roofline, not inside the ceiling. Lifted tiles, gaps at the eaves and fascia, box gutters, roof vents and broken ridge capping are the usual entries, and a possum that has lived in a roof for months will test every one of them.

Deterrents such as spikes, trimmed branches and repellents make a property less inviting, but only physical sealing actually stops a possum getting back in.

How the door works

One-way possum door installation, step by step

A one-way door only works as part of a sealed roof. This is the order we follow on every job.

  • Inspect the whole roofline and find the entry the possum uses most
  • Seal every other gap with mesh, sheet metal or tile clips
  • Check for joeys, and wait if they are too young to leave
  • Fit a door matched to the roof so the possum can push out but not back in
  • Return after three to seven nights, remove the door and seal the final gap

Possum proofing roof options compared

Most jobs use more than one of these. The difference is which ones actually stop a possum getting back in.

Where possums get in

Possum proofing roof entry points we check

A possum needs a gap about the size of a tennis ball. These are the places we find them on Melbourne roofs.

Galvanised mesh fitted under roof tiles to stop possums getting in
Galvanised mesh fitted under roof tiles. Tile gaps are one of the most common ways possums get into Melbourne roofs.

Lifted or broken tiles

Cracked, slipped or lifted tiles and gaps where tiles meet walls.

Eaves and fascia gaps

Openings where the eave lining, fascia or gutter has pulled away.

Box gutters and valleys

Wide gaps under box gutters and along roof valleys.

Vents and solar panels

Roof vents, whirlybirds and gaps around solar panel mounts and pipes.

Ridge capping

Loose or cracked ridge capping with bedding that has crumbled away.

Overhanging branches

Trees and vines that give possums an easy path onto the roof.

Support the seal

Possum deterrents that make proofing last

Once the roof is sealed, these steps make your property less attractive, so possums spend less time testing it.

Branches and tree collars

Keep branches at least 1.5 metres clear of the roof. A smooth collar around a trunk stops possums climbing the tree they use to reach it.

A nest box

A nest box high in a tree gives a brushtail somewhere else to live, and a possum that settles in one tends to keep others away from your roof.

Food and gardens

Lidded bins, fallen fruit picked up and netting over fruit trees remove the reasons possums visit in the first place.

Fences and spikes

Possum spikes or a flexible wire top on fences and downpipes make the usual climbing routes much harder to use.

Why proofing fails

Possum proofing mistakes that let possums back in

When a possum is back within a week, it is almost always one of these.

  • 1Sealing the roof while the possum is still inside, which traps it and damages the roof as it tries to get out.
  • 2Using expanding foam, timber offcuts or soft flashing that a possum can chew or pull away in a night.
  • 3Sealing the gap you can see and missing the three others on the far side of the roof.
  • 4Leaving the branches and fences that deliver the possum straight back onto the roof.

Possum proofing questions to ask any company

01

What will you seal it with?

Galvanised mesh, sheet metal and tile clips last. Foam and soft fillers do not, and a possum proves it quickly.

02

Is the return visit included?

The one-way door has to come off and the final gap has to be sealed. If that costs extra, it is not a fixed price.

03

Do you check for joeys?

A door fitted over a mother with dependent young separates them. A professional checks first and waits if needed.

Questions

Possum Proofing Melbourne FAQs

Not sure how many entries your roof has? Tell us the roof type and where you hear the possum, and we will talk you through it.

Call 0435 073 966
How much does possum proofing cost in Melbourne?

Possum proofing starts from $350 including GST for a single entry point. Standard homes sit from $350 up to $550 and complex roofs from $550 up to $850, with the price fixed before work starts.

How does a one-way possum door work?

A one-way possum door opens outwards only. The possum pushes through it at night to feed and cannot push back in, so once every other gap is sealed it has no way back into the roof.

How long does one-way door installation take to work?

Most possums leave on the first or second night. We leave the door for three to seven nights to be sure, then remove it and seal the final gap.

Do possum spikes Melbourne homes use actually work?

Possum spikes Melbourne homeowners fit on fences, ledges and downpipes make climbing awkward and help keep possums off the roof, but they do not seal a roof. Use them with proofing, not instead of it.

Does a possum repellent roof treatment work?

A possum repellent roof treatment helps discourage a possum from returning after it has been removed and the gaps sealed. On its own it rarely moves a possum that is already settled.

What materials are used for possum proofing a roof?

We use galvanised mesh, sheet metal, tile clips and weatherproof sealant, chosen to suit tile, iron, Colorbond or flat roofs. Possums cannot chew through them.

Can you proof the roof while the possum is inside?

We seal every gap except the one the possum uses, fit a one-way door there, and seal the last gap only after the possum has left. Sealing it inside would trap it.

What if there are baby possums in the roof?

We check for joeys before fitting a door. If they are too young to leave with their mother we wait, because separating them is cruel and unlawful.

Do possum deterrents replace proofing?

No. Possum deterrents such as lights, spikes and repellents make your property less attractive, but they cannot close a gap. They support proofing.

Will a nest box stop possums getting in the roof?

A nest box on its own will not, but combined with proofing it gives a brushtail somewhere else to live, and that possum tends to keep others away.

Is the one-way door removal included?

Yes. The return visit to remove the door and seal the final entry is included in every quote.

How long does possum proofing last?

Proofing done with galvanised materials lasts for years. Every entry we seal is covered by our 36-month guarantee.
