What does a possum catcher do in Melbourne?
Reviewed by the Safe Possum Control team, updated September 2026
A possum catcher removes a possum that is living inside a building, such as a roof, wall cavity, garage or shed, using a humane cage trap. In Victoria the caught possum cannot be taken away. It has to be let go on the same property, within 50 metres of where it was caught, after sunset on the day of capture.
Because the possum stays nearby, catching it is only useful if the way it got in is closed first. That is why a good possum man seals the building while the possum is in the trap, so it is released to a roof it can no longer enter.
For most roofs a one-way door does the same job without handling the animal at all, so we only set a trap where a door will not work.
| Price | From $350 inc GST, sealing included |
|---|---|
| Possums we can trap | Brushtails living inside a building |
| Ringtails | Only with a DEECA authority |
| Garden possums | Cannot be trapped |
| Release | Same property, within 50 m, after sunset |
| Trap checks | First thing the next morning |
| Usual time | One to three nights |
| Guarantee | 36 months per sealed entry |
Humane possum trapping, from first call to release
Every trapping job follows the same order, so the possum is handled as little as possible and your roof is sealed before it goes back outside.
Confirm the possum and the law
We identify whether it is a brushtail or a ringtail and where it is living. That decides whether a trap can be used at all.
Choose the trap site
The cage goes on a stable, shaded spot on the possum route, away from pets, with a cover to keep the animal calm.
Bait and check early
Traps are baited with fruit and checked first thing the next morning, so a caught possum is never left sitting in the sun.
Seal the building
While the possum is safely in the trap, every entry point is sealed with galvanised mesh, sheet metal or tile clips.
Release after sunset
The possum is let go on your property within 50 metres of where it was caught, once the sun has set that day.
When to call a possum catcher near me
A one-way door handles most roofs. These are the places where we reach for a cage trap instead.

Wall cavities
A possum living inside a wall where there is no opening a door can be fitted over.
Inside the living area
A possum that has come down through a manhole or chimney and is loose in the house.
Garages and sheds
Possums nesting in a shed roof, garage rafters or storage area attached to the property.
Under floor spaces
A possum sheltering beneath the floor of the house with several ways in and out.
Awkward roof entries
Entries where the roof shape or a solar mount leaves nowhere to fix a door securely.
A door that has not worked
A possum that refuses to use the exit door after several nights.
Possum catcher or one-way door: which suits your home?
Both remove the possum from the building. The right one depends on where it is living and which possum it is.
| Situation | One-way door | Cage trap | What we usually do |
|---|---|---|---|
| Brushtail in a tiled or iron roof | Works well | Allowed | One-way door and full sealing |
| Possum inside a wall cavity with no roof exit | Often no place to fit it | Allowed for brushtails | Cage trap, then seal |
| Possum loose inside a room or garage | Not practical | Allowed for brushtails | Cage trap the same day where possible |
| Ringtail possum in a building | Works well | Needs a DEECA authority | One-way door and full sealing |
| Possum living in trees or the garden | Not needed | Not allowed | Deterrents and a nest box |
| Mother with young joeys | Wait until joeys can follow | Avoided | Delay the job, then proof |
Whichever method is used, the possum stays on your property. The difference is whether it can get back inside.
